Soil is a dark comedy-drama series that follows the adventures of Ismael, a young Moroccan entrepreneur who has a brilliant idea: to sell Moroccan soil to Belgian Muslims who want to be buried in their homeland. Along with his friends JB and Nadia, he sets up a soil business that promises to bring them fame and fortune. However, they soon discover that dealing with the dead is not as easy as it seems. They have to face various challenges, such as corrupt officials, greedy competitors, family conflicts, and cultural clashes. Soil is a series that explores the themes of identity, belonging, tradition, and modernity in a humorous and poignant way.
The most challenging parts of designing graphics for Soil was to create a visual identity that reflected the tone and style of the series. Soil mixes humor and tragedy, tradition and modernity and required me really understand (belgian-)moroccan culture in order to create a relevant and truthful canvas for the series.
This meant designing anything from moroccan wall tiles to neon fitness signs, from underground artwork to gravestones and over-the-top grave monuments.
